Electric Hurdles

Speed Is Electric

Speed is how fast the body can repeat the required motion. In hurdles, that is the fixed race pattern, repeated faster.

Founder method

Speed Is Primarily Electric

Speed is how quickly the body repeats the required motion. For a sprinter: thigh switching and arm switching through full range. For a hurdler: the race pattern, repeated faster.

“It's my philosophy that speed is primarily "electric".”

Coach notes
  • This is not a muscular adaptation only.
  • The founder's observation: NCAA-qualifying Division I sprinters, especially hurdlers, sit in roughly the same neighborhood for body fat, muscle mass, weight-room ability and overall athletic profile. At that level, Electric repeated-motion quickness is the separator. The founder confirmed this statement exactly as given.

What Electric Means at the Hurdle

As fast as you can.Do not crash.Keep the discipline of your shapes.

“Electric just means hurdle the hurdles as fast as you can with as much speed as you can and not crash, but also maintain your discipline of your shapes.”

Coach notes
  • This is the drill-level definition the founder gave at the 7s of 7-14-21. All three conditions hold at once.
  • "Electric overs" is the name of the fast pass in every phase of 7-14-21.

The Speed Levers

Dance fast: the same shapes and rhythm, switched faster.Bounce over the hurdle. Do not vault, launch, jump or dig.

Lever
Step frequency
Ground-contact time
Shin angles
Reactive forces
Central-nervous-system switching speed
Accuracy of required shapes
Speed of the required rhythm
Thigh-switching speed
Arm-switching speed
Named speed levers
Coach notes
  • Learning order in the Dance Fast model: establish the mechanic and shapes, establish the rhythm, reduce unnecessary barrier effort, train faster switching inside the same shapes and rhythm, then express it as dancing fast.
  • BOIL A FROG then carries close-spacing Pop, Bounce, stiffness, shuffle and forward lean through progressively more race-like drills.
  • The halved ground-contact time and 30 percent lower flight time the founder mentioned are his ballpark illustrations, not calculated findings.

  • First to Fifty -- The hurdle race is roughly fifty steps, and the winner is the athlete who takes them fastest.
  • Productive Danger -- The hurdle's job is to create a problem. The athlete presses the gas without crashing and lets trained instinct solve it.
  • Stiffness, Pop and Bounce -- Stiffness is the hurdler's superpower. Pop is good, jump is bad, and the bounce goes forward down the track.
