Electric Hurdles

The Tape System

H1 is zero. One color down the track. Colors are practice spacings; black is race truth.

Field reference

Three Rules

Zero point: H1 is always zero. Measure every mark from H1.One color: use the same color down the track for a consistent drill.Down only: when rounding is required, calculate independently and round down.

Coach notes
  • Formula: mark = spacing x (hurdle number - 1).
  • Do not measure hurdle to hurdle. Do not build later marks by adding rounded values. Shorter is always preferred to longer.
  • Use color plus label. The label matters as much as the color.

Colors and purposes
Coach notes
  • Choose the athlete group, then the tape format (metric, engineer's feet, feet and inches, or whole-foot imperial), then one color.
  • The metric and imperial color families are separate systems. 7.3 m is not exactly 24 ft (24 ft is 7.3152 m). Use one tape format at a time.

Women's Black Is Not 28

Women's feet-side colors come from the 28-foot family: 24, 25, 26, 27.Black is not 28, 56, 84. Black is the true 8.50 m race mark converted to the tape format.

Coach notes
  • 8.50 m is 27.887 ft, so the women's black marks run 27.8, 55.7, 83.6 ft on an engineer's tape, or 27 ft 10 in, 55 ft 9 in, 83 ft 7 in on a feet-and-inches tape, each rounded down.
